About James Mclaughlin

Currently I freelance as a Senior User Experience Consultant & Information Architect with a varied skill set, working for small start ups to large digital agencies. My responsibilities have involved a number of deliverables, from UX Strategy documentation, Design & Planning assets of the project lifecycle :-

  • Client Consultation & Requirement gathering
  • Formation of UX strategies based on user needs
  • Communicating the Site aims and Business Objectives to the relevant stakeholders
  • Developing Site maps and user journeys, personas and scenarios
  • Designing blueprints and wireframes
  • Building pixel perfect prototypes for userability testing and client approval

In addition to these, as a Consultant I have been responsible for interpreting the client’s ideas and needs and leading them from concept to final deployed digital product.

This site was designed as a place for me to show my professional work. I run a company called Carthage that primarily houses my private clients work. Over the last 12 years, I’ve built a resumé and portfolio.

What I can do

Starting out, I was designer. My higher education was in Visual Communication, but I’ve always had a curiosity about how things work. My years as a designer have progressed, I’ve picked up more business strategy and User empathy skills. I enjoy collaborating with other smart people, but also happy working solo doing things from start to finish. Below are some of my software skills.

  • OmniGraffle — My prefered software for designing and articulating prototypes, blue prints and annotated wireframes.
  • Axure — Another bit of software I have used for detailing mockups & prototypes, blue prints and annotated wireframes.
  • Balsamiq Mockups — I have recently used this software with a few of my current Start Up & Agile methodology clients, they love its rapid tools.
  • Visio — My prefered software when wroking in MS or a PC enviroment.
  • XHTML Markup & CSS — Using coding best practices for building web sites with web standards.
  • Adobe CS5 — 10 years experience with this software. Everything can be originated from scratch.
